Understanding How To Keep Your Boiler System Well-Maintained

Deann Hunter

There are steps you should take in order to prevent your boiler system from malfunctioning. When you take the initiative to ensure that your boiler system is well-maintained, it's possible that minor issues will be identified and fixed before they cause any permanent damage. The three types of boiler systems that should be checked regularly consist of the forced air unit, hot water system, and steam mechanisms. The information provided below provides some tips for keeping your boiler system well-maintained:

Maintaining Boiler Mechanisms

The first thing you should do when inspecting your boiler mechanisms is to check the vent connection pipe for signs of deterioration. While examining the connection pipe, it's essential to note any cracks and holes located on the boiler, so they can be closed off with a sealant as soon as possible. The heat exchangers will also need to be inspected for possible water leaks. If you notice that there is a water leak, it's possible that the control knobs on the boiler will need to be readjusted.

Maintaining The Combustion Chamber

There is a combustion chamber that is located on the boiler. In order to ensure it is well-maintained, the chamber should be checked regularly for possible cracks and fixed as soon as possible. This is essential because cracks in the combustion chamber can create a gas leak. In addition, consider having a working carbon monoxide detector in the vicinity of the boiler as this will also inform you if there is a gas leak. The combustion chamber area should also be cleaned of oil, dust, and debris as this will prevent the unit from possible corrosion and sediment settling on the surface.

Maintaining The Hot Water Unit

The hot water unit located in the boiler should be inspected by testing the pressure relief and high limit control valve. When you inspect the hot water unit, you have to run the drain lines attached to the valve on the boiler to see if it's hot. If the valve is hot, it typically means that its opening and closing efficiently. In addition, you should also be able to hear the water as it runs through the drain lines. The high limit control unit on the boiler system should also be tested to ensure the pressure release valve is functioning properly. Press the pilot button down in order to release the pressure, if the air doesn't release, the gas should be shut off until the valve is replaced.

If you are unsure about how to perform these boiler system inspections, consider consulting with a heating boiler repair contractor.
