3 Tips For Safely Using Your Dumpster In The Winter Time

Deann Hunter

If you have a dumpster that your business uses, it can become challenging to use your dumpster during the winter time if you live somewhere that gets a lot of snow and ice. Here are a few tips that will help you use your dumpster effectively during the winter time.

#1 Plow Around Your Dumpster

If you want to be able to use your dumpster during the winter months, and if you want your garbage service to be able to empty your dumpster, you need to remove the snow from around your dumpster. If you hire a snow plow company to keep your parking lot clean during the winter months, make sure that you let them know that you don't want the snow from your parking lot piled up around your dumpster. It can take a long time for the snow that is piled up from your parking lot to melt, and putting it next to your dumpster will make it harder to use.

Make sure that you use a snow shovel to remove any remaining snow that is right around your dumpster that the plow is not able to move. Use a brush, like the one for cleaning snow off of your car, for removing snow from the top lid of the dumpster.

#2 De-Ice Around Your Dumpster

Removing the snow from your dumpster is not enough. You also want to make sure that all the ice is removed as well. You don't want to have an employee slip and fall while trying to throw garbage into a dumpster. It can be difficult enough to throw large garbage bags of trash into the dumpster; you don't need to add the challenge of balancing on the ice to that task. It is best to make sure that you de-ice around your dumpster in the morning before your employees need to take out the trash. On your dumpster pick-up day, you should also make sure that you de-ice thoroughly around your dumpster so that the garbage truck driver can easily pick up your dumpster.

#3 Keep Your Dumpster Covered

You are going to want to make sure that you keep your dumpster covered. If your dumpster has a lid on it, encourage your employees to close the lid. You don't want rain and snow getting inside of your dumpster; that will add unnecessary weight to your dumpster.

If your dumpster does not have a lid, throw a tarp over it to keep the rain and snow out of your dumpster. Contact a company like Parks & Sons of Sun City, Inc. for more tips.

As a team, we started working together to overcome our challenges, and it made a tremendous difference. I was really impressed with how much everyone was able to come together, and it really helped us to create a more profitable company. Check out this blog for more information.
