Wire Mesh Easter Baskets: Making Mesh Fun!

Deann Hunter

Wire mesh is an awesome material for so much more than what it's been created for. A little creativity and a few additional supplies and you can create some beautiful lighted Easter baskets to display in your yard this upcoming holiday. Here's how to do just that.

Supply List

  • Wire Mesh
  • Tin Snips
  • Needle-nose Pliers
  • Ruler or Measuring Tape
  • Sharpie
  • Work Gloves
  • Zip Ties
  • Scissors
  • Decorations
  • Strings of Lights

The following instructions are for creating a basket that measures 12x12x6 inches: 12" wide, 12" long, 6" deep. To create this size basket, you'll need a 24" square of wire mesh plus a strip that is 24" long by 3" wide.

Measure and Cut

Lay the wire mesh out flat. Measure and mark 6" squares on each corner. You'll be cutting 6" squares off of each corner of the mesh. Use the tin snips to cut the mesh while wearing the work gloves. The mesh will have sharp edges, so proceed with caution.

When you're done cutting, the mesh should be in the shape of a big plus (+) sign.

Fold the Mesh

You have 4 sides to fold. Place the ruler where the skinnier parts of the plus sign meet the center. The ruler will help you create a nice, straight fold. While wearing the gloves, fold the mesh upwards. Once you've folded all 4 sides, you'll have a box with an open top.

Use the zip ties to hold the 4 sides together. You now have the basket shape.

Attach the Handle

Now, get the 24" by 3" strip of mesh. This is the handle. Attach one end to the center of one side of the basket using the zip ties. Then, attach the other side of the handle directly across from the first side and attach it using the zip ties.

Decorate the Basket

Now for the fun stuff. You can use ribbons, fabric, beads, flowers, or whatever you choose to use to decorate the Easter basket. Use the holes in the mesh to weave fabric or the stems of silk flowers through. Once you have it looking like you'd like, you can put a string of lights inside and illuminate it.

Note: If you plan to allow small children to help you decorate it, use some fabric and hot glue to cover all of the sharp edges before allowing them to help.

These make great gifts and can really make your front lawn pop this Easter season. Talk with your local mesh distributor to learn about the types of mesh and how to go about getting what you need to create these fun decorations.

About Me
Taking Great Care of My Factory

After spending a few years getting my business off the ground, I knew that I had to do something to make things right in our manufacturing department. It seemed like we were never able to keep up with demand, and I could tell that we needed to sort out some safety issues. As a team, we started working together to overcome our challenges, and it made a tremendous difference. I was really impressed with how much everyone was able to come together, and it really helped us to create a more profitable company. Check out this blog for more information.
