Keep Things Cool: How To Care For Your Cooling Towers

Deann Hunter

If you have a cooling tower, it's important that you have a good maintenance plan. This includes using the right products. Cooling towers help cool down systems that can overheat. That's why you need to keep your cooling towers running smoothly. Read the list provided below. Here are four tips to help you protect your cooling tower system.

Prevent Bacterial Growth

When it comes to maintaining your cooling tower, preventing bacterial growth is essential. If bacteria builds up in the cooling tower, it can increase the risk of disease. Legionella is one bacteria you need to worry about. That's where chlorination comes into the picture. To safeguard your cooling tower, you should chlorinate the water on a regular basis. Adding chlorine to the cooling tower water will prevent bacterial growth.

Focus on Deep Cleaning

If you want to avoid contamination issues, don't forget about the hot deck. The hot deck can get coated with contaminants whenever you chlorinate the water. That's because the water flows through the hot deck. This area can get a build-up of scale, and sediment. That's where the deep cleaning becomes beneficial. After you chlorinate the water, be sure to deep clean the hot deck. You can do that using a hose or brush that provides low-pressure water cleaning. This will remove the sediment and scale.

Disinfect the Fan Housing

Now that you're starting a cooling tower maintenance routine, be sure to spend some time on the fan housing. The fan housing disperses waste heat into the air. Because of that, you need to make sure that the fan housing gets disinfected on a regular basis. If you don't disinfect the fan housing, infectious bacteria can escape into the air. Legionnaires' disease is one of those diseases. You can reduce that risk. You can clean the fan housing with an industrial disinfectant. This should get done each time you clean your cooling tower.

Remove Sludge and Debris

If you want to keep your cooling tower up and running, it's time to invest in an industrial vacuum. The tower sump can fill up with sludge and debris. Sludge and debris can't always drain properly. That's why you need an industrial vacuum. The vacuum allows you to remove the sludge, without draining the entire cooling tower. When you do drain the cooling tower, you can use the vacuum to get into the cracks and crevices. This will help keep your cooling tower sludge-free.
